How is hafnium diboride HfB2 powder produced?

2022-03-31 09:49:35  News

The combustion synthesis method of high-purity hafnium diboride powder is realized according to the following steps:

1. Mix the basic raw materials and diluent. The basic raw materials include hafnium dioxide HfB2 powder , boric anhydride and magnesium powder. The weight percentages are: hafnium dioxide: 30% to 60%, boric anhydride: 10% to 40%, magnesium powder: 15% to 50%, and the weight of the diluent hafnium diboride is 0 to 3 times that of the basic raw material ;

2. Dry and mix;

3. Put the uniformly mixed raw material powder into a graphite boat, and then put it into a closed pressure vessel. The airtight pressure vessel is cooled with circulating water, and the reaction is maintained under a protective atmosphere or vacuum condition with a pressure of 0-5Mpa. Self-propagating combustion of raw materials into products;

4. Take out the product after cooling down. The product is a mixture of hafnium diboride and magnesium oxide. The magnesium oxide is removed by acid washing, and the hafnium diboride is washed with water, filtered and dried to obtain hafnium diboride powder.

Characteristics of hafnium diboride HfB2 powder

Hafnium diboride HfB2 powder  is an ultra-high temperature ceramic composed of hafnium and boron. Its melting temperature is about 3250 degrees Celsius. It is an unusual ceramic with relatively high thermal and electrical conductivity, and has the same characteristics as isomorphous titanium diboride and zirconium diboride. It is a gray metal appearance material. Hafnium diboride has a hexagonal crystal structure with a molar mass of 200.11 grams per mole and a density of 10.5 grams per cubic centimeter.

Hafnium diboride HfB2 powder Overview

Hafnium boride HfB2 powder  is a gray crystal with metallic luster. It has high conductivity and stable chemical properties. It hardly reacts with all chemical reagents (except hydrofluoric acid) at room temperature. It is prepared by mixing and heating hafnium dioxide, boron oxide or boron carbide, and carbon powder, or by reducing hafnium tetrachloride and boron trichloride under hydrogen at 2000 ℃ or directly reacting hafnium and boron. It is used as a superalloy.

Hafnium diboride HfB2 powder has high melting point, high hardness, good electrical and thermal conductivity and good neutron absorption performance. It has important applications in the fields of ultra-high temperature materials, super-hard materials, electrode materials and neutron absorption materials.

With the development of material technology, the application fields of hafnium diboride ceramics and composite materials are becoming more and more extensive. Obtaining low-cost, high-quality hafnium diboride powder is currently an important R&D director at home and abroad. Hafnium diboride is difficult to sinter. In order to improve the sintering performance, it is necessary to obtain ultrafine powder. Although nano-powder has superior performance, it has high cost, it is not easy to disperse during raw material processing, and the process is difficult. Therefore, the development of submicron hafnium diboride powder has attracted more and more attention.

Hafnium diboride HfB2 powder belongs to ultra-high temperature ceramics, which is a ceramic composed of hafnium and boron. Its melting temperature is approximately 3250 °C. It is an unusual ceramic with relatively high thermal and electrical conductivity, and has the same characteristics as isomorphous titanium diboride and zirconium diboride. It is a gray metal appearance material. Hafnium diboride has a hexagonal crystal structure with a molar mass of 200.11 g/mol and a density of approximately 10.5 g/cm³.

Hafnium diboride HfB2 powder Application

Hafnium diboride HfB2 powder in wear-resistant coatings. Due to its excellent fire resistance, it is also considered to be used in ultra-high temperature composite materials together with silicon carbide (SiC). The addition of silicon carbide improves its oxidation resistance.

The oxidation resistance of hafnium diboride depends on temperature and pressure. At a temperature of 1500 °C and a pressure of 1 atmosphere, a protective oxide scale of hafnium oxide is formed. When the temperature rises above 1600 °C and the pressure drops below 1 atm, the oxidation resistance of HfB2 will be significantly reduced. Under these conditions, the boiling temperature of B2O3 (one of the oxidation products of HfB2) will exceed and a protective oxide layer will form.

Due to its strength and thermal properties, the material may be used in ultra-high-speed reentry vehicles, such as heat shields for intercontinental ballistic missiles or aerodynamic fronts. Unlike polymers and composite materials, HfB2 can form an aerodynamic shape and will not ablate during reentry.

Hafnium diboride HfB2 powder has also been studied as a possible new material for nuclear reactor control rods.

Hafnium diboride HfB2 powder is also being studied as a diffusion barrier for microchips. If the synthesis is correct, the barrier thickness can be less than 7 nm.
