Cuprous oxide, a red crystalline substance, can be produced by electrolysis or furnace methods. Hydrogen, carbon monoxide, charcoal or iron can easily reduce it to metallic copper. It imparts a red color to the glass and is used as an antifouling paint.
Why is the color of cuprous oxide red?
Red copper is a reduced form of ordinary black copper oxide (CuO). During the normal oxidative firing process, it will be converted into the form of copper oxide (CuO), thereby producing a normal green color in the glaze and glass. If it is reduced and fired, it will maintain its Cu2O structure to produce a typical copper red color.
